CEO, Dr. John Apea, highlights untapped potential in rural fintech growth

The CEO of eTranzact Ghana, Dr. John Apea, has called for greater attention to rural areas in Ghana’s fintech revolution. Speaking on Building Bytes about the rise of digital payments and financial inclusion, Dr. Apea stressed that rural communities play a crucial role in the country’s digital economy.

“The rural market is underappreciated, but that’s where the real money is,” he said. “Places like Makola and Abossey Okai are economic powerhouses, and fintech has a lot to offer these communities.”

Dr. Apea pointed out that rural banks adopting GhanaPay are making digital payment services more accessible to people in underserved areas, even when traditional banking systems are unavailable. This development is especially important for regions outside major cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, where access to banking services has historically been limited.

He noted that eTranzact Ghana is already working with rural banks to expand digital financial services. “We’re doing quite a bit with rural banks, but there’s so much more we can offer. This is a step in the right direction, and I hope more fintech companies will see the value in serving these communities,” he added.

Dr. Apea’s comments highlight the need for more investment and innovation in rural areas, which remain a key but often overlooked part of Ghana’s economy. As fintech continues to grow, rural communities have a unique opportunity to benefit from digital financial services, driving economic empowerment and financial inclusion across the country.
